So I'm sitting here taking a break for a moment, wondering how the heck it's already been a year since I made this post...

and how the *bleep* it's been 12 years since i was being rushed down the hallways of the L&D ward getting ready for an emergency C-section to deliver my very first princess.... my little buddy... who is now 5'6", and nearly as tall as me already!

We definately have some of those "tweener" moments going on in our house that make me absolutely nuts but for the most part- I couldn't be more proud. Here's to my gorgeous first born- I put you on the cover of a magazine... just because I know you're beautiful enough to be there- but smart enough to know-- that's not everything.....

Miss Mia

Doing a little happy dance this week- Miss Mia has finally arrived- and she is perfection!

We had to shoot this in two sections because our girl was not EVEN gonna sleep for us the first time.....

And her daddy was on leave for just a bit so we shot them together last week and then Miss Mia and I hung out today for a bit to see if we could get her to stay asleep so that we could play dress up!

She did and I'm so glad it worked out to get all the shots we wanted.

Can't wait to see her in a few months to see how much she's changed!

It was so good to see my friend Kris and photograph her sweet baby bump for her much anticipated son!

I would have loved to have included daddy but he's off helping to keep our country safe... in places afar.

{thank you sir for your service- and Kris- thank you for the sacrifices you make as a family to have him absent at this time.}

I wish for you a smooth, easy labor and I can't wait to meet this boy in a few short weeks!

Amanda & Will

So..... I have to admit.....This is a weirdly delayed post.

Amanda & Will's event was back in August.... and yes, .... I realize it's now JANUARY....

But this gorgeous event wasn't really mine.... not a Natural Approach Photo job....... and I wasn't required to process my images.....

What I mean is, that it was actually shot with/for Jenny GG Photography with Jenny GG and Jen Wade
{two of my favorite girls in the whole wide world}.

And since I didn't have to do anything with them- I handed over my discs to the girls so that all of the post production work would match..... and then let them sit on my desktop all this time, because I was on vacation the following day had so much other work to process for my own clients..... that well....

I never even peeked at them... {all those doubt demons swirl in your head the longer you let something be that you need to take care of.... what if they were terrible???????? -
{yes- I do have those thoughts some days...}

The crazy talented duo was jam-packed with weddings that weekend and asked if I would second shoot for them. {Me....shoot for them???? OMG! You have NO IDEA how excited and terrified I was!!!! They are Seattle Wedding photography legend!!!}

I am pretty sure I thought I might be ill about four different times that day due to nerves.... the dead last thing I wanted to do was let them or the amazing couple down. (did I mention weddings give me the worst case of nerves- I'm seriously an internal basket case every time I shoot one!)

I couldn't have asked for a better experience- Jen and Jenny make me laugh so hard my sides hurt when I'm around them. It was really cool to be a part of the photographic force that they are. I learned soooooo much that day! It has changed how I shoot all together.

The venues at St. Mark's Cathedral and the Seattle Yacht Club were gorgeous and the weather couldn't have been more perfect. Will and Amanda couldn't be more fun- seriously they danced every single dance- down to the very last song- {they were they only ones left in the room besides the DJ} and it was the sweetest sight. And I couldn't have loved the day more!

I hope you enjoy my view of a glorious day- a reminder of sunny, warm Summer days and glimpse of some seriously gorgeous people.

Walking in a Winter Wonderland....

Walking in a Winter Wonderland....

Clearly not written for those afraid of a little snow....and the plan was to play in the snow....

but we never got any!!!

The beautiful Murphy family were rock-star brave as we decided to make a go of an incredibly cold and frosty morning out in Machias {a great roadside find of those cool trees and the Christmas tree farm were perfectly frosty}.....baby girl Randie {who we would shoot for 90 seconds and then bundle for several minutes} was so sweet and so patient- even their pup Kodiak fell in line for a photo!

We had to work quickly but we sure had fun!

Singing in the rain..... ok- how about shivering in the rain????

Welcome to Washington State... when you have the weather- you don't have the fall color... and vice versa.

We had been waiting for the fall color- and then for a number of reasons we had to keep re-scheduling a number of times, but we finally got to meet up and snap some shots of my beautiful friend Lucy and her handsome boys.

They were very good sports, considering how cold we were!

Hello world.... Meet Audrey. She's my new friend... and she's just about the prettiest newborn I've EVER met! Seriously! {I'm crazy in love with this girl!}

Her big brother is Alex (the gorgeous guy with the huge blue eyes that look Earth from outer-space and that amazing red hair.... )....yeah- you know the one....

And her folks are just about the sweetest, most mellow people ever.... {effortlessly & naturally beautiful} it's easy to see where Alex and Audrey get it!

I'm so glad I had the opportunity to take Audrey's first photos!

{and uhm WOW.....how about this set of b&w.... Kristen just looks so peaceful and amazing!}

I love this set... Kristen lost her momma about the same time I lost mine- and Audrey is tucked into the last purse that her mom had purchased- with sunflowers... her mom's favorite flower.... and I adore that she's a sentimental girl like me- because.... this makes me a bit teary-eyed...... And actually there's several other elements in these photos that are memory and heirloom laden... and that makes it all the more special. Big Boy Brayden

My boy Brayden stopped in to see me and snap a quick mini-session in what's left of the fall color this weekend.

OMG! He's soooo big now! He's walking and talking like a toddler!!! No more baby snuggles- he's too busy now.... no time for hanging on to us grown-ups.

{I do love this age- just makes me sad that they don't need us quite as much as they did 6 months ago... sniff-sniff....}

(and pretty soon- he can show his new brother or sister the ropes on how to take pix w/ Miss Didi....

Wow- how much Alex has changed since March when I saw him last! He is so big-boy now!

I met up with Alex and his folks {sister Audry had yet to make her appearance} back in October at

The Farm in Snohomish. What a beautiful place!

We had grand plans that day.... and our scheme was dashed by driving rain about 15 minutes into our session (weird, weird weather here in October) so we had to abandon their belly photos.

{insert pouty face here) But I wanted to share a snip-it of the sweetness that is this family and this old soul who looks like it resides in this little toddlers eyes. His serious, cautious and quiet nature seems to belong to someone 7 times his age. Love that boy!

We did a little vintage nod with Tommy and Ilene as part of their 20 year anniversary and it was scream!

She loves the vintage look and he was a career Navy man- so this was the perfect combo!

We had the fabulous L. Sam Samano on hair and make-up and my girl Fi-Fi on props- add some Absolute wild tea and lemonade and a gorgeous evening.... magic!

Halloween

Take a "stab" at what my favorite holiday is..... LOL!

I tend to go a bit overboard when it comes to Halloween....

I love to decorate both the interior and the exterior of our happy little suburban home... and at the end of the decorating day- if it hasn't run away on it's own- it's been decorated.

My house this year was once again dripping in Halloween and the creep-tastic!

I'm sure it's because I'm and All Saints baby- so pretty much every birthday I've ever had has been Halloween based... and I love it! I've been collecting decor for years... and now that my kids are getting older- I can start to bring the dramatic rather than just the "cute"... And this year, they were really able to help, create and cook and it is making the holidays just that much sweeter.

Gabbi is and always has been a horse nut- so when Onika found several components of an equestrian outfit at our favorite 2nd hand haunt- it was as if the costume Gods were trying to tailor the perfect costume for my girl this year.

Not surprising that Onika wanted to be a Vampiress- again.... {for the umpteenth year in a row...} just with better accessories.... LOL- Oh well- she rocked it.

We had a fun little get together with friends and neighbors and rocked the pre-trick-or-treat snack and the post-frozen children dinner.... witch's fingers, chocolate chip cookies, home-made chili bar, spiced apple cider and a jack-o-lantern pizza.... goodness on a plate!

I even got in on the action as a sugar skull pulled from el Dia de la Muerto lore. I had fun with it- but felt bad- I scared the pants off of several little ones who came to "twik o tweet" my house.... they were definitely NOT ok with whatever I was and where the heck was Mrs. Miles at?????

In the garden of good and evil.....

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

I'm not sure if anyone understands the way my brain works most days.... and I'm sure that my kids certainly did not Saturday morning.... but after a little bit of prodding.... they decided to humor me.... and I'm so happy that they did....

I have wanted to go play in the gorgeous old section of the cemetery in Everett on Broadway for years..... it's incredibly beautiful- the gravestones are enormous and ornate, with wonderful moss invading the nooks and crannies. The trees are Jurassic in size and the leaves are falling in a perfect orange and gold swirl all around on the emerald grasses.

{we paid special attention to stay on the paths and to walk the rows carefully- we wouldn't want to be disrespectful-

just appreciative of the beauty around us there}

It was magic as far as the lighting went- sunny as the fog lifted... so it was dreamy and soft

....mmmmmm.....

And of course- I'm biased... but I got to work with two of the prettiest girls I know!

It was so funny to look back at how we spent the morning... because the rest of the day- was spent in sweaty gymnasiums in basketball gear- looking NOTHING like they had a few hours earlier....

I guess Lisa Leslie's book title says it best...

"Don't let the lip gloss fool you..."

Because they played like total rock-star jocks all day!

Miss Olivia was lucky enough to have visits with both sides of her family just a couple of weeks apart so were were able to catch the fun with more grandpas and grandmas!

Summer fun with Olivia

I'm in catch up mode again this week {but that seems to be the norm anymore...} and I am beginning to feel like I'm in one long marathon to the finish line that just never ends.... and honestly- I have no idea what I'd do if it did!

I thought I'd share some end of summer photos with Miss Olivia and her beautiful and super silly fun family.

This is one very lucky little girl- her fans- I mean family.... would do anything for her.

{including bubbles until they were blue, exploring every single piece of play equipment, hoola-hooping, and chasing the soccer ball around the whole park!}

And speaking of soccer- they are huge Sounders fans- and I love that they all wore their gear for their family photos!

Meet Dave & Adrienne...

I first met them back in 2005 when I shot their engagement photos.... and then I did their wedding photos in 2006 and have loved staying friends beyond their big day.

I was over the moon happy when I found out this spring that they were expecting their first child- and even happier when they asked me to again journal their lives through photographs.

Not only do I love hanging out with them but they are both so gorgeous that you cant help but over-shoot because it's just so good.....

I can't wait to meet the little guy coming our way... very, VERY soon!

{I'm pretty freaked out how fast summer came and went and how little I got out and did with my family} Just in case you were wondering if I ever get out from behind this computer...... I did manage to grab my two daughters and my two nieces and head to Jetty Island for the afternoon with my Sis-in-law Heather. A little pic-nic action, some photos and lots of swimming, splashing and sand... everywhere....

But they had fun- and so did I.

They finally had everyone in one spot for her dad's landmark birthday from as far away as Costa Rica!

It was the perfect opportunity to have me tag along for a little wine & pic-nic and play time at the beach.

We had a few posed group shots but it was more about just journaling their time together in the sun.

Making Strides

Welcome to October- and Breast Cancer Awareness Month!!!!!!

Think Pink- think health, advocacy....and support.

Most all of us at some point in our lives, have been deeply touched by cancer.

Either you're a survivor, a caregiver, friend & supporter of someone who has it, has had it- or will get it.

I have been all of the above..... so I champion non-profits like ACS and The Komen Foundation and volunteer whenever I am able.

I love that my girls have been joining me- walking the whole way- of their own volition since they were 5. We fund-raise together, we walk together, we laugh together- and we cry together. We celebrate our dear ones who have survived their monsters- and we honor those who lost their battle- by doing what we can every year to help bring us one step closer to ending cancer.

I love that they called on me to help capture the essence of who they are- both as individuals and as a couple. It's no small accomplishment to make it 20 years together- especially when you still like each other's company- and make the other laugh out loud.

Ahhh... fall.... crisp air, turning leaves... the chaos of back to school shopping.... admit it- you know you secretly love back to school time.... everyone has to clean out their closets before you stock them back up.... your kids have to get their act together, get a haircut, find their alarm clocks and get back to a routine.... {sweet-sweet routine}

The only bummer is the generic school photos- hence why my friends Brooks & Samaya are bucking the trend. We went and played somewhere fun, modeled some of their new duds and got some super fun pix along the way!

What a fun way to spend an early foggy morning in the Puget Sound...

Hanging out at the beach with a set of my favorite twins!

Gavin & Sophie are SOOOOO BIIIGGG now! Blows my mind at how they interact now- it's been a year since I've seen them and they are completely different people now... Sophie has gone from being super shy and clingy to open, sassy-cute and gregarious. The girl who hid her face was saying "look at me!" The girl who didn't want to touch the grass... was running barefoot on the sand picking up slimy seaweed and chasing her brother around with it!

Gavin the G-man is definitely more serious now- and independent- the quiet explorer.

It's almost as though the have swapped roles for a bit. I had a fabulous time guys! Always a treat to play with you!

This was my second time photographing a senior for this sweet family-

{I shot big brother Brandon two years ago}

and can't believe how fast the time has gone!!!

I was most impressed with Stanwood HS senior Jordan's excitement and commitment to his firehouse. Most 17 year old guys are not as focused on their future careers.... Jordan has been involved with the Explorer's program for the last couple of years and he's a man with a plan for sure!

He's a quiet rock star.... humble and not a man of many words- but you can tell will get exactly what he sets his mind to.

Whoooohooooo!

I am beginning to think I may have conquered the digital mountain of photos aka Mt. Hauntz-Lapid!!!! It was 3 days of non-stop-rockstar assembly, design prep in Orange County!

I was asked last year by one of my hometown Grangeville girls to come to LA to capture her wedding weekend. How could I refuse????

Gorgeous weather and deeply sentimental & colorful touches held poolside at a dear friend's home yielded the perfect place to combine her Bavarian and his tropical Filipino families and traditions.

It was so fun to see so many faces of friends that I haven't seen in 20+ years.... all in one place and to make oodles of new ones!

We started in Irvine, headed out to Laguna Beach for some engagement shots, and ended up in West Lake Village for the prep & event.... {between two hotels and the home where the wedding took place.... we were hoppin!}

Years ago when the book and movie featuring the Ya-Ya Sisterhood came out, my friend Allison starting re-naming all of us and putting together functions with all of her favorite Ya-Yas... {who all later had Ya-Hoos.... so our times together are not as frequent as they should be....} It's always so fun to get that many gal pals together in one place!

This particular gathering is an a very "Allison" style party- A harvest theme~fondue~ya-ya~Bridal shower for her God Daughter Danielle with every detail in place and a whole gaggle of great ladies who ranged in age from their 20's- to their.... "seasoned" 70's.

There were only two rules for the event- everyone had to wear a fabulous hat and you had to drink your beverage of choice in a pretty glass.... of course the giggles and bawdy laughter were free flowing on this gorgeous summer night!

What a bunch of beautiful and a truly fun evening! Thanks for having me ladies!

And you know I love photographing people in love and the only thing that can top that... is two people crazy in love who wanted to add some funky, old vintage looking, Bonnie & Clyde era photos to their engagement session!

Tara & Edward were magically brought together by a crazy twist of fate and they are silly, unconventional fun in a jar! When fate hands you magic- you don't question it... you grab on with both hands and hold on tight!

I've known Tara most of my life growing up in small town USA {aka Central Idaho} in fact her mother was my social studies teacher! And I was totally flattered when she asked me to come to California to photograph their big day!

That phrase sums up my youngest pretty well. Gabs stopped letting me dress her when she was about 2 .

{ And yes- I realize that I was the parent and I was the one in charge... however with two toddlers there were just some battles I was willing to call a "draw" on, in order to win the war on getting ANYWHERE remotely close to "on time"..... }

She has ALWAYS had a need for huge color and bold print and the more- the better.

"The girl with the most accessories wins"

Would be the 2nd best phrase to describe her now... which is ironic since we used to call her Houdini for her ability to escape clothing, diapers, socks, shoes and hair pretties... oh- and cribs and car seats....

Nowadays, she lives in sports practice gear- so it was hilarious fun to let her dress as bling as she wanna be the other day. We capitalized on a little slice of Heavenly golden hour sun and I got to spend some alone time with my baby- who is definitely not a baby anymore.

So proud and so blessed in this life to be given my amazing daughters and a relationship that lets me combine my love and appreciation of them with my love for photos.

I love it when I get to feel totally rebellious.... I get to go against the grain.... break my regimented calendar schedules and pick up and be spontaneous and go shoot pix just because I've got a wild hair and the sun or moon is just right, or I found the perfect patch of grass or daisies and when the light hits it a certain way- it reads like magic.....

I love even more- when I get to pull others into my craziness......

Enter Brian and Gina..... who's wedding I shot in May and it rained sideways and upside down on us on their big day....{again.... total rock stars these two}.

To whom I texted and said-

"hey... the weather is glorious today... wanna go play in your wedding clothes with me????"

And so on an hour's notice they met me at my place and I pulled my girlfriend Kristen {who is one of my absolute favorite assistants} into my web as well... and the four of us were off to play in alley ways and random patches of daisies in the middle of the freeway..

{don't ask...... I'm stunned we didn't get arrested either!!!}

Who knew you could change in & out of a wedding dress that fast in pubic.....

Months and months go into planning of the perfect wedding day... and in Seattle you pray that you won't have to use the contingency plan if it rains.... But sometimes.... you just have to go with it. Who Let the Girls Out Event 2011

What silly, crazy chaos- what FUN!!! I had the privilege of donating my time again this year to create a dress up photo booth for the ladies attending the event.

My friends Nicky, Trish and Cathy along with a huge cast of additional friends pulled off their biggest bash ever-complete with massage therapists, anesthetists, great beauty and food vendors and dozens of truly amazing raffle baskets donated by local businesses....all to help raise money for their journey during the Susan G. Komen 3DAY event this coming September. The cafeteria at Hillcrest Elementary was bursting at the seams with women who in between their pampering were busy buying tickets and stuffing the jars in hopes of winning their desired basket.

This year I partnered with L. Sam Samano of Extraordin-Hair for one heck of a basket. We offered up a pin-up experience.... An hours shoot time with me- and hair and make up by Sam who is a theatrical stylist- (she's pretty darned amazing I must say!) along with a bottle of wine and truffles... and voila! Perfect experience. Even more fun was watching as my basket come up.... and all the ladies looking on anxiously because they had stuffed so many tickets in that jar (which..... was full!! Yay!!!!)... and the screams of Joy when Kathleen's number was drawn... it was awesome! So I got to meet my client right there on the spot- great stuff!!!!

If you haven't attended this event- you will want to get your tickets for 2012- after the new year- get a hold of me and I'll put you in touch with the ladies to get your hall pass to a kick-ass event!

The Bug Life...

If not- you will....

My friend John is taking leap of fun and faith and making a total career switch and launching two business at once! One as a fly fishing guide in places unknown - the other as mogul of a hip-fun-trendy punch at fashionistas with his line of accessories and apparel aimed at the 40-somethings who live, eat and breathe fly fishing and the great outdoors.

Of course boys and their toys would not be complete without cigars, beverages and smoking hot bikini models.... and we had all three! Miss Crystal was a total rock star- climbing, bending, contorting as directed... it was a hilarious adventure.

**You know- you always seem to think you're pretty alone and remote on some shoots and as soon as someone loses their apparel- traffic comes out of the woodwork... but she totally took it in stride and we just kept on shooting!**

Easter Sunday

I was trying to catch some snaps of the girls before we left and they were cutting up, blowing bubbles and throwing the football WHILE I was trying to shoot....annoying but very funny all at the same time

Easter Sunday was flat and grey outside- but we certainly managed to have fun! The Easter Bunny was very creative and generous to our girls and they had a ball hunting for treats and treasures. We had to scurry around and get dressed and ready to roll and we met up with Ron's side of the family for brunch in Kirkland.

Later in the day we had our friends the Mc Neeleys join us for supper, egg dying and some hoops games. It was good day for sure! Gabbi and Steve are the jesters- always wrestling or messing with each other. Trey and Oni are the quiet cerebral ones- reading or playing board games. We grown ups- cooked, chatted and watched hoops. We feel very blessed that we were all brought together- the families fit so well.

You know- it all sounded good in theory....

One dozen little fuzzy yellow chicks. Check.
Giant plastic Easter Eggs. Check.
Easter Baskets. Check.
One dozen small children (and oodles of excited parents) booked to have photos taken. Check.

Permission to invade the yard of a neighbor, who has the perfect "little old lady" house with soft dappled sunlight through enormous old growth trees, on the unmanicured lawn that is largely comprised of moss- and it was perfect for my giant Easter eggs, baskets and bunny ears.... and lots and lots of children..... Check.

But as I rose early on that completely dreary Sunday morning... it was pouring sideways rain, sleet, hail and snow greeted me when I opened the front door. I was praying to all spirits who would listen to bring me sunshine- or at the very least- make it stop precipitating! But the weather continued to get worse as the minutes ticked by and I took the weatherman's name in vein a number of times while contemplating whether or not it would make me a terrible person if I took up drinking at 8 AM. I was relatively confident that I may have a heart attack- I was positively nauseous.

I began taking inventory of what I did have... (I had left two of my old studio lights burning over night to keep the garage warm for the fragile little chicks and consequently killed both bulbs....) I knew I couldn't shoot indoors in the garage studios with only one soft box and that many moving subjects. (lesson learned... ALWAYS have a back-up on hand....)

Gabbi and I began to brainstorm (she is the best little assistant some days!). We realized that our front porch- was pretty good sized and with the overhang- well shielded from the rain. Our house is boring old plain white with white trim... which acted like a natural light deflector and bounced around what light we did have.... so she and began running around gather props, light poles, clamps and back drops and set up a studio set on the front porch. It was definitely more commercial than I tend to work, but it would have to do!

Thank goodness that my friends and new clients had faith in my craziness- because we got some cute stuff- and as the morning moved along- the sun came out and we had a glorious afternoon.

And I absolutely could not have pulled this event off without my two built in assistantants- Oni & Gabbi you were rock stars! And a huge thank you to LSHS Senior and fellow photo-geek, Kaitie Jacobs. It was certainly not glamorous work- but it was essential to making it all happen.

I know that I have said this before- but some people just blossom in front of the camera- they grow up before my eyes... we start shooting and they are still kids.... and we finish and I get home and start editing and realize that it happened again! I have photos of gorgeous adults.....

Stephen is one of those cases... he's a super nice, great looking teen, who's a senior here at LSHS. We had fun running all over downtown Everett, looking for inspiration in color, light and texture. Holy Springtime Batman!!!

This girl has been crazy busy this month- I can't believe that May is just around the corner.... Big Bertha (my pet name for my camera) and I have been putting on some serious miles traveling to new places, meeting some really cool people and visiting with old friends... and I love every second of it!

I am ridiculously tardy in posting from this shoot... but better late than never, right??????????

Miss O is getting SO big girl- can't believe how much she has changed since October! I met with her and her super cool parents at the

UW Quad in the middle of the awesomeness of all the cherry trees in bloom- it's a glorious sight for sure!

Unfortunately for us- there was about 500 other photographers all doing the same thing on that cold grey morning... so we were playing dodge the tri-pod.... (you find the perfect spot but have to wait for someone else to vacate while staying out of someone else's shot and Miss O is very busy- she had much ground to explore here....) but we still had some great laughs and some sweet shots.

Our kids are only this little for such a short time- capture it now because you'll blink and they'll be grow-ups before you know it! xoxo Didi V.

The Sun and the Moon...

When I was a little girl (and for always I guess) ...She used to sing that I was her sunshine.... and it donned on me today- she was my moon. The moon is what helps to keeps us balanced on this planet- the push and pull of the ocean tides, weather and gravity, etc.

She was my gravity... she kept me centered in the face of life's biggest storms. She was my safe harbor, my protector, and she taught me everything I needed to know about life and how to be a good person. She made me work hard, sing loud and laugh even louder.

That's right- I said it.... Move over Martha.

Ok- I'm not really that crafty anymore- altho- I did turn out some pretty darned cute hair pretties for some darling girls for portrait sessions this spring, and I cooked up a storm this weekend...and not just my easy go to basics... I actually- wait for it...... used a recipe this weekend! I know,... I know- my family was stunned... and rewarded... the braised beef short ribs in a garlic-red wine-balsamic reduction over heavily garlic-buttered smashed potatoes was dare I say- criminal... it was ridiculously good.

Tonight I turned out stuffed pork chops and pan fried zucchini w/ buttered bread crumbs, sprinkled w/ parm s&p, and a dollop of ranch sour cream dip... comfort food to the inth degree on this cold cruddy wet day.

I spent some needed down-time resting and relaxing with my family this weekend- we were sad that Oni's basketball tourney was canceled for her age bracket but happy to have some rest. We've snuggled, laughed, watched movies, hung out with friends and took a deep breath.. and it was a very good thing.*wink*

And this photo montage- really is my house- inside and out- if you've missed it somewhere in all of my ramblings... I L.O.V.E to decorate for the holidays.....ALL of them actually.... My friend Alicia laughed at me yesterday on a quick visit and told me that she no longer needs to buy a calendar- she just needs to drive past my house to tell what month it is... I had a change in my schedule this weekend (no basketball tournament after all) so I had some time open up to grab some shots of a couple of my favorite boys....and even tho the weather wasn't the greatest... we still had a ball! I showed Michael some cool parts of town and he showed me some mad skills on his long board.

Baby brother Brayden was chillin' (aka napping) through his big brother's exhibition- but he woke up bright eyed and bushy tailed for a few shots with one of his favorite people.

Country Girls

With all this sunshine over the last week- I've been running like crazy (and fighting a gnarly cold) so I'm trying to play catch up. (hence why I'm behind in sharing this set)...

I was so fun to see my girl Bobbi last week when she was in town. She's an Idaho County girl like me. And she is the embodiment of simple, un-fussed with beauty. Amazing hair, flawless skin, Jade green eyes, freckles (I heart freckles) and the sweetest smile..... the girl has got it goin' on!

I know I've said this before- but I just love shooting boudoir sessions!

There is something so darned fun about playing grown-up dress up- and helping to channel someone's inner siren. I have women who come to me wanting to look a certain way- but really unsure of how to achieve that look..... and after we're done- they just walk different- taller- with more confidence- all because I've been able to show them- on camera- what the rest of the world sees- and it's absolutely gorgeous!!!

This beauty chooses to remain anonymous... so I can only share a peek... but be assured- the rest are stunning!

Birthday Baby

This has been a whirl-wind year already- and I can't believe that it's also birthday time for my youngest!

Nine years ago today, I was up at 4 am doing my hair and make-up and getting ready for my scheduled C-section. It was finally here- the end of the longest 9 months of trouble and anxiety ridden pregnancy and time of my life and the beginning of life with a newborn and a toddler.... and about to be some of the longest days of my existence.

I was up that early because this time around- I wanted my first photos with baby to not look quite so horrible as I did when Onika finally came into this world... I wanted to look alive- and perky... (of course after surgery and massive weight gain.... there was no pretty- or perky- just saying...)

Gabrielle came into this world with some pulling and prodding and a few surprises. She was supposed to be small- a low birth weight baby due to what all ultrasounds had said was a two vessel cord baby... there were also the partial placental abruptions and then low amniotic fluid. We had been hanging by a thread for months of bed rest- praying that she would be ok. The final scan had placed her at 6 pounds- with there being the possibility of a pound in either direction... small- but do-able.

After a not so pleasant 5 attempts to get my spinal going (thanks Everett General @ Providence).... we were finally down to business.. only she wouldn't fit through the incision.. all I heard was, "uhm... need a little help here...." and of course I panic (in between puking every few minutes... anesthesia- not very nice to me). Turns out she was not small, low birth weight- or a 2 vessel cord baby... she was an 8 lb 4 oz, 21.5 inch cruise missile who came out screaming loud and proud! Our prayers had been answered- she was not only fine- she was perfect! And so began life with Gabrielle.... our youngest has been determined to survive from the very get go- and that tenacity- is the very core of her personality!

She is not only one sharp cookie- but one of the naturally most gifted athletes we've seen. She had figured out how to scale the kitchen cabinets before she could walk independently- and was single handedly the reason that our homes had to be baby proofed with locking cabinets and chimes on the doors. (Oni- never pushed that envelope- Gabbi- every danged day). In fact we called her Houdini for the longest time- clothes, socks, shoes, hair pretties, strollers, crib,car seats... you name it- she could escape it!

So it's a really good thing she was graced with those huge copper colored eyes, and a smile and dimples that go to the moon and back- it's the only thing that has saved her some days!

We are so proud of the person she is- inside and out! Happy Birthday to our "Hula-Hula" girl! xoxo

Brayden's back!

oh! Just look at those eyes!!! My little buddy Brayden and his pretty momma come by for his Valentine's/ 7mo sitting on Tuesday. I can't believe how much he's changed in the last 6 weeks!!! He's all big boy- crawling and sitting up by himself... and personality.... oh! I just love him! Love me some baby snuggles!

Slow Burn.....

Gwen has said that she was always told she was "cute" or "sweet".. but what she was looking for was "smokin' hot!".... well honey.... I believe we have found your inner siren.... enjoy! {cause girl- you are smoldering and a slow burn!!!!!}

Happy Birthday!

I am sitting here in awe of the fact- that at this time- eleven years ago today.... I was being whisked down the halls of Everett General for an emergency C-section after 4 days of inducement (and they were the absolute longest of my life).

My heart was racing- I was scared to death- and my heart was broken. I was ready- I was going to push this baby out- natural with little or no pain meds..... I had take all of the classes- read all the books, had a Douala and my husband....

ME: "Wait! Where the hell is my husband????"

As we race down the hallway, she's up on the table with my gown ripped back and rubbing iodine all over my enormously pregnant belly....

NURSE: "He'll be right here ma'am... he's still changing into sterile surgical scrubs."

Meanwhile.. back in my hospital room.... Ron emerges from the restroom to find the room empty, me and the bed GONE... he freaks- grabs the first orderly he can find...... by the collar and in a rather uncharacteristic moment screams:

RON: "Where the hell is my wife??????"

ORDERLY: "Sir, if you'll just put me down.. I'd be happy to take you to her..."

RON: "OH! Uhm, thank you"...

Clearly not some of our finest moments- and yet- they were- They had my strapped down and cut open in record time and with some pulling and prodding- they pulled out the most amazing perfect, little beautiful baby girl out of my abdomen. (I'd be remiss if I didn't say that I had a fleeting moment when I felt like Sigourney Weaver in Alien(s)... but it was the single most amazing and exhausting experience of my 28 years to date, on this planet.

Little did I know THEN that labor and delivery was absolutely the easiest part about having children!!!!! And yet- we choose to do this all over again two years later with Gabrielle... so clearly we were brain damaged from lack of sleep- or.... it really is as cool as we think!

Through the months and months that turned into years, with no sleep, teething, potty training and enough laundry to wrap the entire planet in... we have survived. We've survived the arrival of Onika M. Miles- (and Gabrielle L.) and their non-stop energy and talking, endless streams of homework, projects and sports practices... and we're only halfway done..... We still have homework, and more homework.....more endless sports practices and games, driver's ed and more sleepless nights ahead when they begins dating and we'll long for the days that we could hold them in one hand and be the center of their universe.

I am so incredibly, ridiculously proud- and in love with my kids! Happy birthday to my brilliant, beautiful and crazy talented Onika. You make my heart soar! xoxo ~ Momma

A day with my girls

Today- was a good day.

We as a family run pretty crazy busy all the time around here at Che' Miles.... so it was a bit of a shock- and a welcome respit- that today- there was not a single thing on the calendar.

The weather wasn't half bad-{it wasn't that great either tho...} but we braved the chilly air and the promise of a slice of sunshine. Since the girls' birthdays are coming up... I decided it was time to go and update the snaps of my beautiful girls. The large scale images of them, that don my walls... are roughly 5 years old!

It took some bribery... a trip to Bite Me Cupcakes was one of our stops, and a cruise through Faded Elegance on First in Snohomish. {we love Miss Kim and her absolutely fabulous shop!} We got to play dress-up, giggle and just spend some time together. And it was good.....

The girls have changed soooo much since I originally shot their now famous "African Queen" shots 6 years ago and so has my ability as a total novice photographer! Our overall looks have grown up- gotten a bit more beautiful and sophisticated.... and I couldn't have achieved that without them! They are now, always have been and will likely always will be.......my muses- the ultimate inspiration. And now that they are getting older- they are my assistants and my color commentators and consultants. {they were two of the four people who's opinions on style I especially value- and consulted when choosing the look for the new website that we'll be launching this spring!!!}

I pulled out this amazing dress from Africa and the beads that I received with it- figuring the girls were old enough to try it on. I've had this dress in my possession for at least 30 years. The original owner was a little old lady from back home- who had traveled the world over and had artifacts and curiosities in every little nook and cranny of her amazing home. I remember commenting that I thought it was the most amazing dress I had ever seen... and she pulled off the display and gave it to me! And I am still enamoured with it... and I'm so glad I've had an opportunity to utilize it today.... because it was perfect!

Never pass up the chance to spend some time with a good girlfriend or two- and never miss the chance to have a beautiful photo of your self taken. Every woman- regardless of age- deserves beautiful photos of herself. Learn to see yourself through someone else's eyes.... You'll be amazed at the beauty THEY see- that perhaps you missed before.

Room Re-do

You know- there are some days when I question my sanity...ok- let's be honest- there are a LOT of days when I question my sanity....

But when I tackle a monster painting project... and wonder somewhere in the 9th or 10 hour "Who the hell was I kidding -'it'll be quick'...?????"

I totally want to kick my own arse for taking it on- but once involved.. you can't just stop either... so I then push myself to the verge of physical illness and and a nervous breakdown! (I keep the makers of Advil and my favorite chiropractors in business... so really- I look at my redecorating spells as economic stimulus!)

All joking aside tho- there is something so liberating and comforting about completing a room re-do.... for the cost of a couple of gallons of paint, and maybe some new linens you can totally transform your space- and the overall feel of your home.

I'm sure there is some deep seeded emotional need for change and fresh starts this year... but I'm just going to go with- 'because I felt like it'...

I tackled our master suite last Friday- and took a warm & cozy (albeit tired) olive and caramel colored Asian/Balinese inspired space to something that feels like I threw some French Country and Montego Bay/Carribean in a blender! It works tho- We have heavy black furniture, and a pretty big master suite- so I decided to go with something bright and fun- and how can you go wrong with a box from Tiffany & Co? right???? I shopped around the house and pulled old artwork and books, etc out of retirement and made a space that feels like a vacation. With the breeze fluttering through the new sheers and a little bit of sunlight- it's so cool and refreshing. I crave being in there now.

Change can be a very good thing... go outside your comfort zone today... you might be brilliantly rewarded!

He's here! He's here!!!!! He's finally here!!!!!!!

We've all been waiting on pins &and needles waiting for him to arrive. We were SOOOO excited to finally meet baby Gabe on Sunday!!!! And we're over the moon happy for our friends Sussy & Chester.

Happy New Year!

Heck it's almost Happy Valentine's...... and speaking of Valentine's.... this is going to be on heck of a gift....

I was SO excited to get to work (it was a whole lot of laughing and playing.. hard to call it work...) with Gwen again yesterday!!! I met her and her hubby last summer for their "We-Did" session at Edmonds Beach.

We decided to road test my newly redecorated boudoir/master suite that I spent all day painting on Friday and added the finishing touches to after work on Saturday.. we rather liked it- it's sort of Paris meets Montego Bay... it's fresh and feels like a vacation. And of course with smokin' hot looks and legs like Gwen's... it was sure to be a hit! We got some very saucy shots.... I'm pretty sure her hubby may have to receive medical attention when he receives these for Valentine's day.... so ssshhhhhhhh! Keep it on the DL!

First Year

Everyone always says, "time just flies" but when you look at that from the last 6 months in the life of one of my favorite little babies... you can really see the changes that such a short time can bring.... I was just playing around as I finished his holiday set and I'm gearing up for his Valentine set with his pretty momma.... so stay tuned.

I have also acquired some cool new props for new babies in the garage studios.... so stay tuned for that as well. Now- bring on the New Year and all the new babies!!!!!

The Lights of Christmas

Last night we hopped in the car and made the trip to the Bellevue Botanical Gardens to check out their AMAZING light show. I was sure it was going to be pretty, and I was expecting lots of lights draped on all the plants there.... I was not prepared for the absolute artistry involved. It was light sculpture- but unlike anything I've ever seen. If you have the opportunity this holiday season- go check it out. It's a cheap date night out with the kids- for a big bang for your buck! Enjoy!

Eclipse

Sometimes, it's the strangest things that turn into a family activity.

I saw a "How-to" on Jodi Friedman's blog for her absolutely fabulous MCP site. {Have I mentioned I love her photo tools?????? I do- I heart them a lot...}.... any hooo... I read that 12.20.10 was to be a fab full lunar eclipse.

I decided to break out the tripod that was still in the box- collecting dust in the corner for oh..... 6 years.... and give it a whirl.

I'm not going to lie... it was cold as all get out on the patio.... playing with my settings and trying to figure it all out. Pretty soon- Big Daddy was out there- bringing me a jacket and with his video camera and tripod in hand. Soon after- the girls came outside- to inquire what on Earth we were doing out in the cold. They of course had the smartest plan- to watch from the hot tub. So they disappeared to get suits and towels. We grown-ups had to rely on the rum in our egg-nogg for warmth. {WINK}

We laughed and answered their questions as we watched and waited as big fields of clouds rolled through- giving us the occasional perfect view of a most spectacular moon. And as the shadow began to move in to the bottom left of the moon- unfortunately- so did a solid mass of clouds..... and just like that- our perfect view was gone. We watched and waited, and waited, and waited.... nothing. I went back out periodically- but you could barely make out a faint light source- and you had to really strain to see it.

And while this is certainly not NASA worthy... I felt it was a decent job for my first attempts with my tripod and new lens. I shot this with my Canon 50D with a prime 70-200 EF 1:2.8 IS II USM at F11 100 ISO

And- I was able to laugh and spend some quality time with my family.

In the Life...

I'm not really sure where the hell the last year has gone.... I've been so ridiculously, insanely busy- quite on purpose really- that I haven't really given myself the time to mourn or think about my mom's passing. I've developed amazing skill at swallowing down the tears and marching on with life- like she taught me to do... today is now Friday the 17th... and while the date of death is the 18th... it was this Friday, one year ago that the calendar stopped for me. It was one year ago that my cell phone rang while I was standing in line at the post office- mailing out the last couple of little gifts to my folks.

It was my dad. ( he doesn't call unless it's absolutely necessary- partly because he doesn't hear well, and mainly because the old cowboy isn't much for chatting on the phone... never has been.) He told me that mom had been airlifted to Spokane- and that they thought it was her heart. The grey commercial carpeting in the post office began to swirl under my feet. My mind raced- how could I make it there the fastest? What about work- and the kids and their tourney the next day.... and how do I get to Spokane? I hadn't been there in at least a decade... I remembered drive to Vantage and hang a left.... but I was on my way. Making frantic phone calls to Ron and work. Ron happened to be home- he reeled me back in- made phone calls and printed maps while I frantically packed an overnight bag.

A few minutes later I was in my car- fueling up and away I flew. My phone was ringing off the hook and my foot was buried in the accelerator. I was on a mission- on angel's wings. I passed countless police officers on my way down I5 and out 90 driving 85+ MPH with a cell phone to my ear and tears running down my cheeks..... they didn't even blink.

The news and conditions worsened the further East I raced..... I couldn't get there fast enough- and it was 34* and freezing fog and snow and ice everywhere.... the fact that I didn't end up wrapped around a Jersey barrier is a true miracle in itself....

The rest as they say is history.... When I arrived- she was just coming out of surgery. And in my mind- we were going to be fine. We were always fine- no matter how scary- and how many times she and I were at each other's bed sides for surgeries and emergencies over the years... we were always fine. We were always fine because we were together. There was never a doubt in either of our minds- for my entire 38 years on this planet- that we didn't have each other. We'd been through some pretty scary crap together.... we'd be fine.....

Only it wasn't fine. The full-up, tubed-up, inti bated state that stared back at me, made me want to throw up. I watched the monitors blink and beep- knowing full well that the numbers I was seeing- were not good. The constant flood of people in & out of her CCU room were all business... they didn't have time for warm fuzzies. I continued to pray and think positively.... it wasn't working. And after several hours of this painful dance.... the surgeon and doctors came to dad and I and told me what I already knew..... that the machines had been doing the work for hours and the total lack of bp was killing off the tissues... we had to make the call. Or rather he had to make the call as her husband. I'm not sure that I have had- or ever will have had a harder time. I had to raise my voice so that dad could hear me- and tell him as plainly and clearly as I could that we needed to turn off the machines. The look of pain and terror in his blue eyes rips my heart out every single time I think about that moment. Having to explain that she had already gone- it was just the machines moving air and fluids. At first when we explained that it was time to the family who was there to supports us- no one was sure they wanted to be there when the machines were turned off. It was like a bad movie that you couldn't escape from. I kept thinking that if I opened my eyes again- I'd wake up and it would all just go away. No such luck.

There was no doubt in my mind I would be there to hold her and say good bye. And soon- our small and fragmented family joined me. And one by one- we all kissed her good bye. I sat at the head of the bed near her heart. I remember thinking how perfect and soft her skin looked. It felt like silk. And I remember thinking how lucky I am that I got her lips- she had the most beautiful lips and smile- tho she'd tell you she hated her smile. I remember wondering 'how the hell did we get here?' I mean really... she's 56- 56 years old.... that's young now days....how? why? why me? why her? What will I do without her? She was my best friend.... how do you live without your best friend? The person you talk to several times a week and knows everything about you? How do you live without that?

A few minutes later- there was just silence. No more breath sounds. Just peace. The nurse marked the time and they turned off the monitors. I just sat there... dumbfounded. What now? I had just driven to the edge of the universe at record speeds, knowing that my presence would surely rally her- and that in a few days- she'd be going home- and my life would "fine".... now what?

My Aunti asked me to sing Amazing Grace for her.... ugh.... I had to turn my back on the family- I couldn't look at them- and I could 't disappoint them either..... I was able to rally a chorus- first verse.... it was sad and mournful- probably a minor key.... but I made it through..... and the sounds of sobbing from daddy- just about killed me.

The next few days of the endless streams of phone calls and arrangements, more driving, more arrangements.... trying to hold my dad together. Trying to hold my kids together.....Thank GOD for my husband- who played quietly in the background helping where he could- snuggling with the kids and whatever else needed to be done. The other blessing in disguise was that it snowed- a lot the night we got back to Grangeville... so that was distraction for them.

In the spirit of keeping busy- the stream of phone calls and visitors was a welcome distraction and painful reminder. Sometimes it's so hard to tell if folks want to see if you're just a blubbering mess or if you can keep it together... kind of a sick game really. But that's all water under the bridge now.

Her service was standing room only and the charity of her choice received record donations... evidence of a life well lived. Folks came from amazing distances in the rotten weather to pay their respects.... something she would have never expected..... My mom was incredibly loyal and giving- you knew you'd been loved and hugged by her.... even if she never thought folks cared or noticed. They did. She was loved and appreciated. And she is missed deeply.

Her graveside was held in the snow- with flowers from my friends and family from over here- {and guitar pick from a fellow musician back home} laid on her urn. I picked out the prettiest, girliest- blue inlaid urn I could find.... {she would have approved}. And again- my Aunti asked me to sing.... I'm sure not my finest performance - but a song that we sang together and that she had sung for countless folks over the years....

I have been dreading this day for weeks... and suddenly it has crept up on me. And while I suppose that it would be nice to curl up in a ball and have a good cry... the world just doesn't stop for me. More of those life lessons I got from her I guess. I have worked harder in the last year than ever before to be the kind of person she thought I was- and that I want to be. I am making an effort daily to make the most of my everyday, to find the beauty in the smallest detail, to laugh out loud, and live in brilliant peacock color!

I miss my mom's voice, her laugh, her hugs- God knows her cinnamon rolls.... But mostly- I just miss her presence. I miss knowing that she is a phone call or a 6 hour car ride away. I miss her point of view- her advice- her ability to talk me out of the rafters when my temper got the best of me. I miss her so much it hurts. I have some great girlfriends..... but none that knew me as well as she did.

I'm sure that I've rambled for quite long enough. If those of you reading this take anything away from this post- it should be this. Count your blessings daily, don't wait to tell someone how you feel, say I love you often- and mean it, sing out loud, shake your butt and do a little dance, help when you can- sometimes all it takes is a smile or to lend and ear.
